SUMMERTIME goes to Sao Paulo 2024

In its international premiere, Mahmoud Kalari’s new film, SUMMERTIME, participates in the 48th edition of Mostra – Sao Paulo International Film Festival (October 17th to 30th, 2024 / Brazil).

After establishing himself as one of the most distinguished Iranian cinematographers in the highly acclaimed works by prominent Iranian cineastes such as Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Jafar Panahi and Asghar Farhadi and winning the Best Film Award at Mar del Plata IFF 1998 with his directorial debut venture, THE CLOUD AND THE RISING SUN, Kalari focuses on a unique feast of imagery in his new film. Traveling back to the time of Coup ’53, going through the story of a childish lie leading to the collapse of a family and the downfall of a young man, Kalari concentrates on two recurring themes in the Iranian Modern History, ruining the people under the heavy steps of the times: How are the children affected under the pressure caused by the big social unrests? And how do the ordinary men feel obliged to stand on the wrong side of the history and betray their own people?

So it is all about these kids… these two kids, one little boy and one little girl, who were cousins, playing in an old house and the alleys of Tehran and didn’t know anything special about the turmoil in the city in 1953 – the year of the American coup in Iran. Living in the granny’s house, Atta and Masi, were experiencing how they should live when their daddies were absent as Atta’s dad was in prison and Masi‘s dad was dead…
